FAQ

What is a UUID?

A universally unique identifier: a 128-bit value written as 32 hex digits in five groups, such as 3f2b8c1e-9a4d-4c7e-8b1a-2d6f0e9c5a7b. They are used as IDs for database rows, files and API resources.

Should I use UUID version 4 or 7?

Version 4 is fully random. Version 7 starts with a timestamp, so new IDs sort in creation order, which keeps database indexes compact. Both are defined in RFC 9562.

What is the difference between a UUID and a GUID?

Nothing in practice. GUID is Microsoft’s name for the same 128-bit identifier.
